Description
Golden Reflections of Canadian Wildlife: Wolves and Elk
The sweeping Canadian wilderness is a gift that our nation loves to celebrate. The seemingly endless nature spanning between three oceans is a source of many wonders. It is both beautiful and honest in its harshness. Canada?s landscape is home to 1,449 species of vertebrate animals. All compose an intricate food web where each can be prey and predator alike.
With a striking design by award-winning Canadian wildlife artist W. Allan Hancock, the second coin in the Golden Reflections: Predator and Prey series depicts a great elk cornered by two hungry wolves. Trapped in the water and all escape routes blocked by the predators, the elk prepares for its last stand as the wolves eye their next meal. Set against the picturesque backdrop of forests and mountains, the scene depicts the brutal reality that sometimes occurs within the magnificent landscape. Although unforgiving, this moment remains an intricate part of Canada’s beautiful nature.
KEY FEATURES
- Innovative application of existing technology. Golden Reflections refers to the coin?s full gold plating and the design?s use of reflections on water. It uses conventional minting technology to reproduce a captivating work of art.
- Popular subject matter. The previous 3-coin series, Reflections of Wildlife (2016), was a best-seller among the Mint coin collectors. The wildlife is a picturesque gift Canadians continue to celebrate in this new, gold-plated edition.
SPECIAL FEATURES
- Artwork by award-winning Canadian wildlife artist. W. Allan Hancock masters his particular trade. His artworks have been prominently featured across Canada and abroad since the early 1990s.
- Remarkable dimensions. The 50 mm diameter shape of the coin makes it a substantial piece within your collection. The larger size allows coin lovers to enjoy the intricate details of the artwork.
DID YOU KNOW?
- Favourite target. The depiction of an elk as prey was not coincidental. Elk and other large hoofed animals are the preferred prey of hungry wolves.
- Patient and calculated. A wolf pack can track larger prey for days before striking. With a herd of elk, the wolves will take their time to assess its targets and pick the weakest one.
- Dangerous prey. While the elk is a herbivore, it is not defenceless. Wolves occasionally find themselves injured or killed, either struck with a hoof or impaled on antlers.
DESIGN
The reverse design by Canadian wildlife artist W. Allan Hancock features an elk?s last stand against a pair of hungry wolves. The scene is set against the backdrop of picturesque mountains and forests of Canada?s wilderness.
