Description
A new motion-themed series takes flight.
It begins with communication — noisy vocalizations and repeated head tosses that indicate intent to fly. Stepping up to the “start line” with unfolded wings, a Canada goose (Branta canadensis) rushes forward to gain speed and momentum before lifting off to join others in the sky, where every wingbeat gives the flock a collective aerodynamic advantage.
Known for its “V”-formation flying, the Canada goose is the first of three great Canadian species featured in our Majestic Birds in Motion series of coins. Each reverse is a captivating celebration of avian flight, using selective colour to highlight the distinctive plumage amid the engraved setting, and a multi-frame hologram to show them in motion as they fly across our skies.
Key selling features:
FIRST in a new, three-coin series featuring some of Canada’s most iconic birds in flight!
Features a multi-frame hologram, which provides a smoother, more realistic depiction of movement than previous holograms!
Gorgeous mix of selective colour and engraving!
Did you know?
- Canada geese are found in most types of wetland, with a breeding range that stretches across most of Canada (except the high Arctic).
- There are several subspecies of Canada geese—from the smaller cackling goose of the Arctic to the largest one of all, the giant Canada goose.
- “V”-formation flying helps the geese expend less energy, thanks to the drafting effect created by the leader’s wingbeats. It also allows easier coordination of the group’s movements in case of speed or direction change.
- Migrating flocks consist of several families and individuals travelling together. In the spring, pairs usually break away to nest; in late summer, geese begin to congregate at feeding sites in larger numbers.
