Britain’s Longest Reigning Monarch
Britannia has been a British icon ever since the Romans used the name to represent the islands they conquered over 2,000 years ago. She is a warrior goddess, a symbol of pride and power, often shown wearing a Corinthian helmet and carrying a shield and trident. As the 20th century began, Britannia was used a symbol of national mourning, featuring in magazine illustrations in 1901 as Britain grieved the death of Queen Victoria, and then again in 1910 as the nation mourned her eldest son, Edward VII. As the pace of progress then quickened under the reign of Queen Elizabeth II, Britannia too adapted with the times. Now, as Britain remembers its longest reigning monarch on the first anniversary of Her late Majesty’s death at the age of 96, Britannia is once again in mourning.
