DESIGN:

The reverse design by Canadian artist Bonnie Ross features a circular collage of the iconic plants, animals, geographical phenomena, and human activities that characterize Canada’s ICY Arctic region. The circular design invites the viewer to rotate the coin and admire the intricate vignettes of plant and animal species, snow crystals and icebergs, and human innovations and activities. Centred around an ice crystal encircled by a flurry of delicate snowflakes, the coin’s circle of life reveals wildflowers and berries, birds such as ptarmigan and puffins, and fish species including char and grayling. The land and sea mammals of the Arctic walk, swim, run, and leap, from beluga and narwhal to the harp seal, polar bear, ICY Arctic wolf, caribou, muskox, Arctic fox, Arctic hare and lemmings. Across the meandering landscape filled with icebergs, ice floes, and open water are human activities such as ice fishing, dog sledding, snowmobiling, and more. The reverse is engraved with the word “CANADA,” the face value of “200 DOLLARS,” and the date “2016.” The obverse features the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt.
