Description
Perfect harmony comes full circle?our first silver and gold yin-yang coins.
The ancient yin-yang symbol is a masterpiece of engraving on these prestigious coins. They?re the first to feature gold and silver to illustrate the Chinese philosophy of duality. Gold is yang. It is fiery and active like the sun that dominates the sky. This high-energy realm is captured in the form of a swallow. It?s a symbolic bird that is one of the fastest and most acrobatic in the world. In contrast, the silver coin shimmers like a pool of cool water. Its yin qualities are perfectly expressed as a koi fish. Together, silver and gold demonstrate the duality that exists in all things. Fire and water. Earth and sky. Their symbolism is profound, their beauty unmatched. Each interpretation will deepen every time you admire these exquisite works of art.

DID YOU KNOW?
Yin and yang change depending on their context. Earth, for example, is yin when paired with the sky (low/high), and yang when combined with water (solid/fluid).
People tend to categorize objects as either yin or yang, but they are not fixed definitions. Water is yin when it?s a calm and serene pond, but becomes yang when it?s a rushing river or an ocean wave crashing against the shore. Human perceptions create new aspects of yin-yang by judging things as good/evil or beautiful/ugly etc.
A circle of koi fish. The yin-yang symbol is believed to have been inspired by two koi fish swimming closely together in a circle. It?s often referred to as the Yin Yang Fish. As such, koi fish are very popular in many Asian cultures. They are considered a powerful feng shui tool for attracting good fortune and instilling perseverance.
The swallow: Man?s best (feathered) friend. In Chinese culture, swallows are cherished for eating insects in farmers? fields. The annual return of this migrating bird symbolizes warmth, harmony and abundance. The quick and dynamic swallow is the perfect complement to the grounded, contemplative nature of the koi fish.
The yin-yang symbol tells the Chinese creation story. When the world was created, the light and airy parts rose to become the sky, and the heavier, solid parts formed the Earth. Water is the eternal connection between the two realms. It falls as rain that nurtures the Earth and is evaporated by the sun to repeat the cycle.
DESIGN
REV: The reverse image on both the gold and silver coins by Canadian artist Aries Cheung was inspired by traditional Chinese folk art and infused with contemporary design elements.
Gold coin: A swallow flies along this unique yang-shaped coin, the tips of its wings almost touching as they are portrayed mid-beat. The spread of its feathers, its strongly curved wings, arched back and tail convey the swallow?s quick and dynamic flight. The freedom and expansive sense of sky are enhanced by a background of auspicious clouds.
Silver coin: A koi fish swims along this unique yin-shaped coin, its curved body, flowing dorsal fins and tail following the coin?s outer edge. Its prominent scales feature multiple frostings to convey the multi-coloured beauty of this graceful fish. A background of concentric curves evokes the deep, contemplative nature of water with stylized waves breaking at the surface.
OBV: The obverse image on both the gold and silver coins by Canadian artist Aries Cheung features the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt centered in the widest portion of the tear-shaped coin and flanked by ELIZABETH II and D.G. REGINA.
Gold coin: Auspicious clouds echo the sense of sky featured on the reverse. CANADA 2019 and 200 DOLLARS are engraved along the outer edge of the coin.
Silver coin: Concentric curves and stylized waves echo the koi fish?s earth-bound existence featured on the reverse. CANADA 2019 and 10 DOLLARS are engraved along the outer edge of the coin.
