Description

A MOTION-filled series comes to a close? catch it before it?s gone!

With the flap of its mighty wings, the golden eagle gracefully takes to the skies! This large raptor can reach flight speeds of more than 120 km/h, aided by finger-like flight feathers that reach into the wind for added lift and stability. But r, this goldencoloured bird can also cleverly conserve its energy by flying into thermals, where the warm updraft allows it to stay aloft for hours by simply gliding.

Strong and agile, the golden eagle is one of the three great Canadian species featured in our Majestic Birds in Motion series. Each coin selectively highlights the bird?s colourful plumage and sets it apart from its engraved surroundings, while a multi-frame hologram re-creates its characteristic flight movements across the sky.

Did you know:

  • The second-fastest bird (the peregrine falcon is the first), a diving golden eagle can achieve an air speed velocity of nearly 320 km/h! Its average flight speed is much lower, at about 48 km/h, with a level flight speed of 125 km/h.
  • The eagle turns the edge of its wings into the wind to pick up speed, or slow its approach by exposing the full surface of its wings to create drag.
  • As Canada?s largest birds of prey, the golden eagle is one of just two eagle species found in North America (the other is the bald eagle). It is most common in western Canada, although small populations exist in other parts of Canada.
  • Often (but not always) solitary, the golden eagle is carnivorous and hunts prey from high above.

A group of eagles, like the one on the coin?s reverse, is known as a ?convocation.?
