The great horned owl is not the fastest bird in flight — but what it lacks in speed, it certainly makes up in stealth. While its large wings are ideally shaped for greater lift, a close look at the owl’s wing feathers reveals a comb-like fringe that cuts through the air and reduces turbulence in flight, allowing this nocturnal hunter to fly in near-total silence.

Secretive and stealthy Bubo virginianus is the second great Canadian species featured in our Majestic Birds in Motion series. • One of our most common birds of prey, the great horned owl is a year-round resident of Canada and inhabits a wide range of habitats, from forest to tundra.
• Spotted colouration allows this owl to blend in among the trees, but there are also regional colour variances, including the darker plumage of great horned owls on the West Coast, and the lighter plumage of those inhabiting Northern Canada.
• The owl’s dense plumage helps dampen sound during flight.
• An opportunistic feeder, the great horned owl is known to prey on waterfowl. As a result, an owl may mistakenly splash down in a lake or river, where it will use its wings to paddle back to shore.
• The owl’s eye is equipped with three eyelids: an upper and a lower lid, and a nictating membrane to protect the eye in flight.
