DID YOU KNOW?
MAPLE OF MANY FACES. There are over 100 maple species worldwide. Ten species are native to Canada, and 5 are portrayed in this set. The sugar maple has an iconic 5-lobed leaf similar to [like] the one featured on Canada’s National Flag. It grows throughout the Maritimes, southern and central Quebec and Ontario. It is the best source for our world-renowned maple syrup. The silver maple’s distribution is more southerly within the same general range. Its leaves have narrower lobes than the sugar maple, and have numerous sharp and irregular teeth along the margins. The Douglas maple is a short tree that can appear shrub-like. It’s range is limited to British Columbia and southwestern Alberta. Its leaves are generally smaller than sugar or silver maple, with 3-5 lobes and coarse, double-tooth margins. The black maple is often confused with the sugar maple, but its leaves have indistinct teeth, and dense velvety hairs on the lower surface. The bigleaf maple is limited to coastal British Columbia and Vancouver lsland. Its name hints at the temperate climate that enables its massive leaves to grow up to 60 cm wide.
DESIGN
Canadian artist Nathalie Lagacé has beautifully portrayed the distinctive character of five different maple species: the sugar maple (1kg), silver (1/2kg), Douglas (5oz), black (2oz) and bigleaf (1oz). A cluster of maple leaves dominates the centre of the coin and is finely engraved to illustrate the overall shape, veining, lobes and edging that distinguish each maple species from the others. Two boughs of maple leaves arch upwards along the outer edges of the design, creating a framework reminiscent of pre-Confederation circulation coins. A ribbon flows through each design in a unique way. It wraps itself around the central leaves, and weaves its way through the boughs, bringing a heraldic touch to the design as it ties all the elements together. A single, small leaf is engraved at the bottom of the design. It is flanked by the ribbon ends, with “2020” engraved above, and “CANADA” engraved along the upper edge of the coin.
OBV: The effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth by Susanna Blunt with “ELIZABETH II D.G. REGINA” and “250 DOLLARS” engraved around the circumference of the coin. The maple species featured on the reverse also appears on the obverse as a background pattern.
