Description
Celebrate the 25th anniversary of Canada’s bi-metallic $2 circulation coin with a unique pairing that goes back to its beginnings.
This set features a 99.99% pure silver reproduction of the $2 coin that made its debut on February 19, 1996 – the same day the Bank of Canada ceased to issue $2 bank notes, like the one featured here.
A dream set for collectors of Canadian currency!
Includes a $2 replacement (BRX) bank note. The uncirculated $2 bill is from the Bank of Canada’s 1986 Birds of Canada series and represents the last of its kind. Note the “BRX” in its serial number—the prefix identifies it as a replacement bank note. Replacement notes rarely enter circulation, and this one has been locked in the Royal Canadian Mint’s vault for 25 years.
As of January 1, 2021, all Canadian $2 bank notes are no longer legal tender. The Bank of Canada will still honour them at face value.
KEY FEATURES
- Two pieces of history. Paired with a historic bank note, the 38 mm collector coin features the reverse and obverse designs from the first two-dollar coin issued in 1996, but with a slightly larger (38 mm) diameter and double dates (“1996-2021”) to commemorate its 25th anniversary.
- Selective gold plating. Crafted in 99.99% pure silver, the fine silver coin features a gold-plated inner portion to resemble Canada’s bi-metallic $2 circulation coin, as well as a goldplated rim.
