On September 8th, 2022, after serving as the Heir Apparent for over 70 years, King Charles III ascended the throne following the passing of his mother, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. The Royal Canadian Mint has released a 2023 $5 fine silver coin to commemorate the Coronation of the new King and celebrate the beginning of a new Royal era. The coin’s elegant design features His Majesty’s Royal Cypher, encircled by beads, and includes the denomination and the word “CANADA.”

The obverse of the coin displays a posthumous effigy of the late Queen Elizabeth, as the Royal Canadian Mint works towards completing a new effigy for King Charles III. The coin has a weight of one quarter ounce of fine silver and is exempt from GST/HST.

The Royal Cypher is a unique identifier for a monarch, similar to a coat of arms. British royals have been using cyphers since the time of Henry VIII, and they generally feature the monarch’s initials and titles, often beneath a symbol of rule, such as a crown. Unlike monograms that interweave letters, royal cyphers display each letter distinctly. The cipher for King Charles III was chosen by the College of Arms from a series of designs and features the initials ‘C’ and ‘R’ representing Charles’s name and “Rex,” the Latin word for king, alongside a depiction of the crown.
