DID YOU KNOW?

There are more than 670 wineries across Canada ? from the big vineyards of our most prominent wine regions (Ontario, British Columbia, Quebec and Nova Scotia) to small fruit farms across Canada.

Canada?s first commercial winery was founded in 1866 on our southernmost point: Pelee Island, Ontario.

Canada is the world?s largest producer of high-quality ice wine. Naturally sweet and intensely flavoured, this dessert wine is made exclusively from Canadian-grown grapes (often of the Vidal variety) that have naturally frozen on the vine. The frozen grapes are only picked when the outdoor temperature is -8?C or less, and they are immediately pressed before the fruit can thaw.

DESIGN

The reverse design by Steve Hepburn steps into the heart of wine country, where the rolling hills are lined with fruit-laden grapevines. The grape clusters in the foreground hint at the bounty of the fall harvest season in Canada?s many vineyards and wineries. The image is framed by stylized icons that represent popular outdoor activities and sights in Canada: (clockwise from top) Niagara Falls; a Christmas tree; a rodeo; wine tasting; dogsledding; folk music; cherry blossoms; maple syrup tasting; whale watching; tulips; coastal drives; and the aurora borealis. The obverse features the year ?2019? and face value ?3 DOLLARS?, and the framed effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt.
