The idea of domestic Canadian mint dates back to the 1890s. British Columbia?s Klondike region stayed highly productive after the original Gold Rush in the 1860s, and miners were frustrated by the expense and risk of shipping gold to the US to be processed and sold. In 1901, the Ottawa Mint Act launched the process of building a branch of the British Royal Mint in Ottawa, to help alleviate new Canadian coin demand on its UK facilities. The building was completed and officially opened in January 1908. Nearly 70 years later, in 1976, production of circulation coinage was moved to a purpose-built high-tech facility in Winnipeg, Manitoba.
