In the precious metals market, gold bars are usually manufactured in either cast or minted ingots form. A gold bar in cast form is usually quite ordinary as it is crafted by pouring molten gold into predesigned cast cases and then let cool down. Other form of designs or engravings are set later, though these cast bars have quite rough finish and barely have any shine.
While most of the bars from Johnson Matthey are minted ingots, these are manufactured first as cast bars. Later on, these bars are processed by a stamping press. These stamping presses use a computerized mechanism to craft bars with precise dimensions. These bars then later go through the engraving process by computers. The use of computerized mechanism results in a much more refined and polished finish of Johnson Matthey gold bars.
The front or obverse side of Johnson Matthey gold bars bears the logo of the mint along with a crossed mallet. The logo is followed by name of the mint and then gold purity is indicated. Below that there is the weight of the bar and then the unique serial number is indicated.
The reverse side of 1 oz Johnson Matthey Gold Bars may vary. The usual design incorporated JM logo with crossed hammers tilted at an angle of 45 degrees in a repeated pattern fashion.
Every 1 gold bar from Johnson Matthey offered through Bullion Mart comes securely packed in a temper-proof packaging which includes an Assay card. The Assay card features the same serial number as the bar itself.
Johnson Matthey was started in London in 1817 an assayer shop for gold. It was founded by Percival Norton Johnson. The later merger of the assayer with George Matthey in 1851 gave it the full name Johnson Matthey which later was chosen by the Bank of England as their official Assayer and Refiner.
